PUPPY ALERT!!!  Meet Oscar Junior - Katie's puppy.  Oscar was born on Feb 16th, so he is 10 weeks old and ready for adoption.  While we know that Oscar's mom is a cocker spaniel, it's anyone's guess as to who dad is.  We believe that he'll be about 35-40# as an adult.

Oscar is a very precocious little puppy.  He knows his name and comes when called.  He is working on "touch" and "sit", which he is picking up very quickly.  Because Oscar was the only puppy in the litter, it will be extra important to work on his socialization skills in a supervised setting with other dogs while he is still a baby.  He is currently attending supervised Puppy Socials.  Oscar loves to give kisses, and he'll put his paws on you when he wants to be held.  His tail is constantly wagging, and he loves to play.

Oscar is working hard on his house-training skills.  He can keep his crate dry for up to 4 hours, which is amazing for a puppy of his age.  Because Oscar tends to growl when strangers hold him or play roughly with him, we are looking for a home with older children or adults.  Oscar has no trouble letting us know what he thinks!

Before applying for a puppy, please carefully consider the following issues.  Will someone be home every 3-4 hours to let the puppy outside?  Our general rule of thumb is that if a dog needs to be crated more than 6 hours/day total, then that dog is the wrong one for the person's lifestyle.  Oscar will need Puppy Kindergarten classes.  More dogs under the age of 3 years are euthanized for behavior issues than for illnesses.  Puppies (and dogs) are expensive.  It can cost over $1500 a year to care for a dog (vet check-ups, shots, spay/neuter, heartworm/flea tick preventatives, food, and other supplies).  We do not adopt puppies more than 1-2 hours outside of the Washington DC area (we will adopt to Richmond and Baltimore).
