Hamilton's luck changed for the better the day he was picked up as a stray. Though this sweet, 5-year-old boy was infected with heartworms, the shelter called OBG and Hamilton soon received the life-saving treatment he needed. Heartworm treatment lasts several months and during this time his ordeal gave his foster family a few scares - but he came through it beautifully and has no residual effects from the heartworm! If only people knew the pain they cause dogs when they don’t give their beloved pets the inexpensive heartworm tablets that they need once a month.

One thing we have consistently heard about Hamilton: “He is one of the nicest dogs I’ve ever met!” We think that’s saying a lot when it comes from vets, foster homes and experienced rescuers. Hamilton knows how to charm the ladies in his stately way, and he has his foster mom wrapped around his little paw. (Who are we kidding? His foster dad is pretty hooked too). Like a true mama's boy, he will curl up at your feet or next to you on the couch, when given a chance. And oh, that face! Those beautiful brown eyes! He is one handsome devil.

Hamilton is finally ready to start interviewing families. So what kind of home would be a perfect match? Hamilton is currently living in a foster home with other dogs and does well with them. He would probably do best in a forever home with another animal for company. Hamilton is trained with cats too, and just shows a mild interest in sniffing and checking out the resident cat who is dog savvy and won’t run away. Now meeting cats outside on a walk might be a different story!

Speaking of walks, he does pull some on a leash now that he is recovered and enjoying good food for energy! He will need an owner willing to invest some time in positive training, to help him remember how to walk on a leash and all the other niceties a well-trained young man should learn. He is currently working on giving his paw and sitting. He is fully housetrained and knows to ask to go out. Because of his lengthy treatments – he needed total rest in order to recover from heartworms – Hamilton goes into his crate willingly. Although he is used to the crate, he much prefers being out with his family.

His family should include someone willing to play fetch, after all, that’s his favorite past time. Because he is tall and strong, teens and up are best for this boy. His height also aids in his quest to counter surf, so he needs watching when food is around – typical cocker! A single family home would be best for him, since he barks at noises outside and might initially bark when you leave. Even better? Someone who is home more often than not (what dog wouldn’t love that?)

We anticipate that he will be available for adoption in mid-May 2013 after he's done with his medications and is fit as a fiddle! To learn more about this special pup, email his foster family today!
