Click here to read the recent Washington Post article on the advantages of adopting an older dog.
OBG takes in cockers regardless of age. We've found that our more mature friends are calmer, laid back and generally very sweet wonderful companions. Most have been raised well and are well behaved, but through no fault of their own (family breakup or death, moving, etc) find themselves in the rescue system. They often have plenty of energy, love to go walks (although maybe not real long ones!), and get along with everybody and everything. Typically they are in very good shape, notwithstanding a few old age creaks, bumps and a little clouding in the eyes, and have good years left.
In addition to a regular vet checkup, all of our mature and senior dogs now have a blood panel performed to help assess it's health.
Our mature dogs adapt amazingly well to new homes, usually much better than the younger dogs. In fact, we suspect they fully understand their situation, and seem to go out of their way to show their appreciation to their new owners for giving them another chance. Click here to read some of the Happy Ending Stories of our wonderful seniors. Most of us at OBG prefer these dogs when it comes to getting a dog for our own, and believe that there's no love like the unconditional love you'll receive from them.
