Tucker is really nice gentle guy. We estimate his age at around 9 years
old and he is very happy, friendly, sociable and gets along with people
and other dogs wonderfully. He does this despite being significantly blind and
deaf. He can see basic shapes and light, and hears you if you call sharply. When
he arrives at your home, he will sniff around the perimeter, then zig zag around
until he's figured out the layout. Kind of like one of those Roomba vacuum
cleaners! He uses his nose very well; he can find food and treats like it's
nobody's business, and he follows voices and movements.. He will quickly
figure out your house and your yard, his only issue is steps - he can handle
them and is fine going up them, but will need some help until he gets used to
going down them. But he's a trooper, and after a few days he'll figure them out.
He prefers carpeted steps. He's fine with regular outdoor steps.
When Tucker came to OBG from a shelter he was in horrible shape, and was
obviously a case of extreme neglect. His hair was long and matted. It was so bad
when we cut the matting out we found a ball trapped in it. He obviously had eye
issues that were ignored. He has "dry
eye" in one of his eyes, that will require daily drops. We will be
performing more tests on his eyes to make sure everything else is ok, or at
least that they are stable.
Tucker really likes the outside, and will happily sniff around your yard. He
will have a few accidents while he initially figures out the house, but once
he's settled in he appears to be housebroken and is very efficient about doing
his business in the yard. He's good on the leash, and loves to go for
walks. He's in good shape. He's also rides well in the car, and will learn
how to jump up and down in your back seat. He rarely barks, probably
because of his hearing.
Once he's settled in, Tucker is a real love bug. He loves to hang out with you,
and is very happy to be snuggled next to you on the couch, or curled up at your
feet. He loves belly rubs. His vision issue really doesn't hinder him much, and
it actually gives him an extra dose of charm: he's fascinated with floor length
mirrors, televisions, stainless steel appliances, or anything shiny. He'll stand
and stare at them for a while, then move on to the next one. It's pretty cute.
Tucker loves toys and things to chew on, as the above picture indicates. He
likes other dogs, and would be very happy with another buddy to tag along with.
He's got a great attitude towards life and everyone at OBG just loves him. He'll
give you lots of love and charm you in his quiet way.
