This is a picture of Bubba, and hiding behind him is the girl *he* adopted 4
years ago in August 2000.
Bubba came into rescue in December '99. At that time, only OBG founder Debbie
Reitz could see the diamond that he was. The woman who dumped him told Debbie
to take him -- who would want a 12 yr old dog anyway? Bubba was bald from
sarcoptic mange. He itched so terribly that he gave himself cherry eye. He was
not a pretty picture. Our vets looked him over and decided that he probably
wasn't really 12 -- that 9 years was probably a more realistic assessment.
Debbie got down on her hands and knees and brought out the dips and lotions.
She got rid of the mange and brought him back to health. The doctor tacked down
his cherry eye. Then Debbie sent him to us for fostering.
For seven months, Bubba went to every adoption event. His picture was on the
website. He was the featured dog of the month -- to no avail. In seven months,
Bubba had only one inquiry -- and it didn't go anywhere.
Then Bubba took matters into his own hands. He decided to adopt the child that
also lived here. After all, then we'd *have* to keep him, right? And Bubba
hasn't looked back since.
Bubba has gone to scout events and school classrooms, acting as a rescue
ambassador to teach children about rescue, pet care and pet overpopulation. He
has helped Girl Scouts earn their "Pets" badge. He has visited nursing homes
and travels with his new family.
Most interestingly, Bubba met with Sonya Fitzpatrick, the Pet Psychic. While we
weren't "glamorous enough" to make it on TV, Bubba and Sonya had an interesting
15 minute "chat". We learned about Bubba's worries, likes and fears. Sonya got
him to stopping pulling his fur out by telling him that "yes, he had found his
forever home".
Not too shabby for a dog that might be over 15 years old. We're glad he decided
to keep us.
