Katy sporting her new eye, and Katy with Maxey and Dallas (with Mom!)
December 18. 2001
On November 19th. 1 adopted Katy (aka Lady Bug). After seeing her on your website 1 contacted Dale whom I had previously worked with in February on Maxey. another adoption, to see if she was available. He put me in touch with Derrick, who was fostering Katy. Derrick agreed to meet me on his way into work. because of course I could not wait to get her. 1 did a lot of research and preparation for Katy’s homecoming. While very familiar with the breed 1 had never had a dog that could not see. I had experienced deafness in older dogs, but that was after much time in the home and an adjustment period, as it was a slow onset. I was a typical anxious mother to be. nervous as all get out. Preparing the house, getting additional food dishes, getting her own blanket (“place”). I met Derrick at 8am and was up at 3am, a bundle of nerves. Will she like me? Will she like her new home? Will she like her new brothers? The answer was yes to the first two and we are still adjusting with brothers. Maxey she really likes and loves to chase him and find the toy. Dallas. my alpha dog, she respects and really just stays away from. But they are trying to be a little bossy, and she fights back.
Kate truly loves her new mom and dad. She is very free with kisses and loves to play with toys as well as wrestle with her dad. I take her to work with me as often as I can, I have a pet sitting business, and she is very comfortable sitting in the Jeep. Katy has learned the house very well and now is spending a lot of time in her fenced yard (her choice). She loves investigating the yard. Barking at any noises, smelling for squirrels. She has learned exactly where the steps are up to the patio and into the house. Of course she also knows the gate with the other steps that lead to the driveway and the Jeep. When I start getting ready in the morning she wants out to go sit by the gate, letting me know she is ready too. I was not looking to adopt another dog but saw Katy and really felt I could give her a wonderful home with lots of love. I always knew I wold have a chocolate. I just did not know it would be so soon.
I have only wonderful things to say about your organization. I have adopted two beautiful dogs, who probably are as grateful of me as I am of them. All the people I have dealt with at Oldies But Goodies are wonderful, caring people. I have received two follow up calls on Maxey. Just looking out for the well being of your adoptees. Thank you for allow us to bring these babies into our home and showing them that sometimes it may start out bad but there are people who will love and care for them.
Update: Katy had to have a prothesis placed in her right eye in February 2002. Pain spikes in her right eyeball was causing pain and discomfort. Her opthomalogist recommended removal. After a successful surgery, Katy now has a beautiful blue eye that gives her no trouble at all.
Katy fits right in with our bunch and is constantly amazing us how outgoing and adventurous she is. Katy does not hesitate to go anywhere or do anything. Her only fear is the vacuum, if you get that out of the closet she will go to her “special place” or morn or Grandma’s lap whichever is closest, until the noise goes away.
Both Maxey and Katy are wonderful kids and I feel very lucky to have found them through your rescue. I have enclosed two pictures one of Katy and the other of my three together in their favorite place: on mom!
Sincerely - Kim
