ADOPTED 12/31/01
Chance was scheduled to be put in the gas chamber
on 12/5 unless someone worked fast and was able to rescue him. Unfortunately,
due to the holiday season and shows on 12/1 and 12/2, OBG was having difficulty
finding a volunteer to drive up to W.Va to save Chance.
During the show on 12/1, while we were looking for a dog to rescue, we heard
about this dog in W.Va. and his impending fate. We were supposed to see another
dog in Winchester on 12/2 but were very concerned that Chance wouldn't be
rescued in time. On 12/2 we called Debbie Davenport, who originally told us of
Chance, and volunteered to go get him. We rushed to get him so that we could
return him to OBG's care before the show ended on 12/2.
When we arrived at the meeting place we were relieved to find what appeared to
be a very sweet and relatively healthy but very stinky dog. (We really didn't
know what to expect and had prepared ourselves for the worst case scenerio!) We
quickly loaded him into a crate in the back seat and rushed back to No.Va.
By the time we arrived at the Springfield Petsmart, where the show was being
held, we had decided that his name should be Chance and we had become pretty
attached to him and his very sweet hugs.
Through some quick action and some sweet talking, Debbie Davenport was able to
convince the Petsmart groomers to work him in for a quick bath. He stood still
for a much needed bath, a quick grooming touch up, an ear cleaning and a nail
clipping. (The groomers fell in love with him and couldn't do enough for him
once they heard his story.)
Anyway, we knew then that he was our dog but we needed to be sure that he was
checked by the OBG vet and that he was cat and dog friendly before we could
commit to taking him.
So, we gave him to his foster mom, obtained her
number and proceeded to check on him daily. He saw the OBG vet the following
Wednesday, got some shots and medicine, and we arranged to pick him up for a
trial run on Thursday afternoon.
Thankfully, he is fine with his three new cat brothers and sister (only chases
them occasionally!!!) and he seems to enjoy having a little doggy sister around!
He's been to see the doggy dermatologist and we're hoping to find the cause of
his skin problems in the near future.
He's a big ole' sweet, happy, loving boy and we're
glad that we were able to help the rescue and save a life.
