Coty's story is told by his new mom, Virginia:
My husband and I adopted a wonderful Cocker Spaniel, named Scout, from a local animal shelter over a year ago. She was found stray, so her story is a mystery, but every now and then we get a few clues. We loved having Scout in our lives, and received so much joy in being able to give her a second chance, that we looked into adopting another Cocker Spaniel, this time from Cocker Spaniel Rescue. Coty was listed under "emergency" cases and his story is rather sad. After living with his family for 9 years, Coty's owners were getting a divorce and decided they couldn't take care of him anymore. There were also young children in the home, and Coty wasn't getting much attention. Most of the day he was confined to the kitchen and apparently was verbally abused to the point where he would urinate on the rug out of fear. So, we drove out to meet Coty. He is a friendly, gentle dog and it was love at first sight.Coty adjusted well to his new home, and he and Scout, although not exactly playmates, co-exist peacefully. Coty got a new nickname, "Mr. Licks",because he loves to give kisses. He even gave a big kiss to the vet assistant while having some bloodwork drawn.
Having Coty is like having a big, floppy-eared teddy bear around the house. He has a penchant for kleenex and gum(!); he can sniff out a piece of gum on the sidewalk from 50 feet away and will chew it off the ground in a matter of seconds. He does have seizures, but per our vet's recommendation he is not on medication currently because his seizures are very infrequent and short-lived.
Coty is a wonderful, loving dog and we feel blessed to have him in our lives. Cocker Spaniel Rescue should be commended for the humane service they provide not only to these animals, but to the humans who benefit from their companionship.
